Landing on the Moon

Landing on the Moon

While we could travel to destinations to see areas and famous sites of interest we’re determined by the skills and talents of others to get a glimpse at something we otherwise could never have seen. And while we each can walk outside at night and stare up at the moon in the skies, the world caught its incredible footage of man around the moon when Neil Armstrong stepped onto its surface in 1969.

Armstrong was a humble guy who was blessed to have experiences that are extraordinary. His love for being and flying started when he had been just a little boy. He constructed a wind tunnel at the basement of his childhood home and loved to build model planes, as boys often do. Accordingly, when he was a mere 15 years old he learned to fly, getting his pilot’s permit before he even had a permit to drive a vehicle.

Wartime experiences, further prepared him where he learned to maneuver aircraft in challenging situations. By age 22, almost 80 missions had flown and gained the esteem of fellow pilots because of his art and ability.

In July of 1969, the launch of Apollo 11 took place with an audience. And hours after, Armstrong uttered his now famous first words when he stepped onto the moon’s surface. When that utterance had been discussed regarding that announcement, his brother, Dean Armstrong remembered a poignant moment.

He recalled that, he had gone to visit his brother, before that assignment happened. As the day wore on, both brothers began to play with the board game Risk. As they played, he was handed a piece of paper by Neil and desired him to read what had been written on it. He was curious what his brother thought about what he might say if their landing on the moon was successful, as he thought about the sentence he’d penned.

Understandably, upon returning to earth after Neil that historic experience along with the two astronauts that manned that assignment became celebrities. They also did lots of traveling and were thrust in the limelight. Over time being in the spotlight was exhausting. Neil got focus, and he didn’t feel that he deserved that merit.

Various other particulars about him? He was a father of two sons, along with a girl that passed away in the brain tumor as a little girl. He became a professor and he and his family purchased a farm. He was married and he died from complications that developed following heart surgery, at age 82.

He had a remarkable life, demonstrating, through his aviation career, the capacity to think when the stakes were large, and to act under pressure. However he remained a guy that didn’t have a big head or become conceited from much fame. This touching announcement was released by his family after his passing:

“While we mourn the reduction of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as a good example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be inclined to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves. For people who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, then we have a simple request. Respect his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a transparent night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”

Due to Neil’s that incredible day in 1969, preparation and wonderful career happened, and it gave the world a perspective of a world aside from our own.
