For parents, teachers, and administrators alike, student safety at school is a top priority. In the wake of such an awful catastrophe, there were questions. Who were the shooters? Why did they resort to such violence? What was their rationale? Was there any indication beforehand that they had been planning something?
Both gunmen were boys that had become best buddies: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. While Dylan was known to have a temper, Eric seemed to be calm and friendly with his peers. To most, they looked like your typical teenage boys, and they have been adequate pupils in school too. As later exploring demonstrated, however, under their exteriors, both young men had anger problems and also a disturbing fascination with violence.
Following the shock of the awful day, law enforcement officials were able to find that the catastrophe had been in preparation for over a year before it really took place. The boys’ own writing makes it clear that they were likely a large-scale assault: graphs documenting their bomb making and diary entries talking about an attack on a high school. Furthermore, they found disturbing videos the boys had made. In among them, the two boys are practicing shooting guns, demonstrating the harm done by a bullet to a goal, then joking about it being someone’s mind instead.
Benign goal shooting is all fun and games, but when the boys took what they had learned while practicing and used it to murder many people in real life, it left the nation reeling.
